Stefan Roth is a full professor (W3) of Computer Science at Technische Universität Darmstadt (TU Darmstadt), Germany, where he has been on the faculty since 2007 and leads the Visual Inference Lab. From September 2026 to January 2027, he is a Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Italy. He received his Diplom in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Mannheim, Germany, in 2001, and his ScM (2003) and PhD (2007) in Computer Science from Brown University, USA. His research interests focus on computer vision and deep learning, including scene understanding in 2D and 3D, learning with limited supervision, generative modeling, and explainable AI.
His awards include the Olympus Prize of the German Association for Pattern Recognition (DAGM, 2010), the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize of the German Research Foundation (DFG, 2012), the Longuet-Higgins Prize (2020), and several conference paper awards. He has received two grants from the European Research Council, a Starting Grant in 2013 and a Consolidator Grant in 2020.
He is Speaker of the Research Field Information and Intelligence (I+I) at TU Darmstadt. He is also a Fellow of the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) and directs both the ELLIS Unit at TU Darmstadt and the DAAD-funded Zuse School ELIZA. He served as Program Chair of CVPR 2022 and ECCV 2024, and regularly serves as an Area Chair for CVPR, ICCV, and ECCV. He is a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Computer Vision (IJCV) and serves on the scientific councils and advisory boards of TU Darmstadt and TU Graz, Austria.
